Not Every Opportunity Is Yours to Carry

My sister sent me an article yesterday. It was about how you don’t buy everything you see when you go to the market. You have to be intentional about what you pick because you have a limit to what you can carry.

It got me thinking about life.

There are so many opportunities, interests, ideas, and directions available to us. But just because something is available doesn’t mean it is ours to pursue. We have to learn to discern what aligns with God’s will for our lives and what is worth carrying.

Then, just as I was getting ready for bed, I saw a video where someone was talking about Jay-Jay Okocha and arguing that, despite having extraordinary talent, he may not have maximized his potential in the way players like Messi and Ronaldo did. I honestly don’t know enough about football to say whether that comparison is fair, but it got me thinking about something bigger.

I believe we all have something, a gift, a talent, an ability, a calling, or a problem we are uniquely positioned to solve.

When you begin to discover yours, don’t just admire it. Develop it. Give it your attention. Work at it relentlessly. Be intentional about becoming better at it.

You may not become the best in the world at what you do, and that shouldn’t be the only measure of success. But you should be able to look back and know that you did not waste what was placed in your hands.

You don’t have to carry everything you see at the market.

But when you find what is yours to carry, carry it well.
